The world famous Masai Mara Game Reserve is an extension of the Serengeti (Tanzania) and location of the “greatest wildlife show on earth” when over two million wildebeest, together with zebra and other plains game species make the northward trek into the Masai Mara (May to October) before returning to the southern Serengeti (January to March) for the calving season. However, wildlife is still found in great concentrations throughout the year in every wildlife sanctuary. Travel in the “low season” months offers excellent value for money without the crowds.
Amboseli National Park is one of the most popular national parks in Kenya. Dominated by the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, across the border in Tanzania, Amboseli is famous for its herds of elephant. Samburu Game Reserve is a small, unique, wildlife sanctuary in the arid north of Kenya. The reserve is home to some unusual species like the gerenuk, beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra. Leopard and lion are also found in good numbers. Mount Kenya and the Aberdare range, situated in the heart of Kenya, both form national parks that have varied flora and large concentrations of wildlife.
