AIRPORT / V&A WATERFRONT (CAPE PENINSULA) – 4 Nights:

Cape Town is without doubt one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Blending the old with the new, it has a relaxed, almost continental atmosphere. The influence of early Dutch settlers in 1652, Malay slaves and British rulers have created a rich tapestry of culture not found anywhere else.

The Victoria and Alfred Basins, Table Bay Harbour:  Built in 1860 and still a working harbour, the Victoria and Alfred had been developed into one of South Africa’s biggest tourist attractions.  Original buildings have been renovated and new ones built, all in Victorian style.  There are museums, boat trips, helicopter flips, restaurants, pubs, a brewery, two shopping centres, hotels, theatres, cinemas, The Two Oceans Aquarium (with more than 4,000 creatures representing some 300 species), an outdoor amphitheatre, craft markets, live music and a rich variety of outdoor entertainment.

Framed by the ocean and Table Mountain, the elegance and luxury of the Victoria & Alfred Hotel is rivaled only by its relaxed atmosphere and warm personal service. Built in 1904 as the North Quay Warehouse and converted in 1990 to a luxury hotel, it is named in honour of the Queen of England and her son who visited the Cape in 1870, when Prince Alfred officially opened the Breakwater basin, today’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

All 94 bedrooms of the Victoria & Alfred Hotel enjoy unrivalled views of Table Mountain and the working harbour or the vibrant V&A Waterfront. Rooms are ultra large, superbly furnished and comfortably air-conditioned. Each has a separate shower, fully stocked private bar, king size bed and innovative luxury modern appointments, ensuring a comfortable stay.

Garonga Safari Camp and Little Garonga are exclusive camps situated in the greater Makalali Conservancy situated west of the Kruger National Park. This unassuming sanctuary promises an intimate wildlife encounter in an unhurried environment where you can unwind, sleep deeply and be yourself.

Garonga Safari Camp is an exclusive 12 bed camp. Garonga’s holistic philosophy is to offer a safari for the soul, an unhurried and intimate wildlife encounter, a time to reflect and find inspiration in nature.

Garonga Safari Camp reflects the surroundings of the bush’s textured earthy colours and clean lines have been incorporated with fine linen to ensure pure comfort, a tempting place to lie and meditate for hours.

The luxury tents are situated overlooking a dry riverbed – each with a wooden deck complete with hammock that commands spectacular views. The rooms are light, airy and spacious with large, draped beds. In addition to the indoor shower, there is an outdoor shower, providing the perfect link between the luxury of the suite and the allure of Mother Nature.

GARONGA / THE BLUE TRAIN (LUXURY RAIL) – 1 Night:

For over half a century South Africa’s Blue Train has enjoyed an international reputation as one of the word’s pre-eminent travelling experiences.  Traversing South Africa’s varied landscapes along four alternative routes, the train combines all the comfort and luxury of a five-star hotel with a globally unparalleled journey.

The Blue Train offers the discerning traveller a choice of journeys into a timeless world of grace elegance and romance, where some of the world’s most dramatic scenery stirs the imagination and luxurious comfort soothes body and soul.

Leaving Pretoria and heading east, the initial part of your journey (as you settle into your cabin) will take you across typical Highveld countryside with both cattle and crop farming, and through some industrial towns such as Emalahleni (previously Witbank) and Middleburg.

The area is steeped in Anglo Boer War history, as this is the route from Pretoria to the port of Maputo (formerly Lourenco Marques), in Mozambique and therefore the main supply route for the Boers during the Anglo Boer War.  The original railway line was built by the Netherlands South Africa Railway Company or NZASM during the late 19th century.

This area is also home to the Ndebele, South Africa’s smallest yet most recognisable cultural groups, due to the colourful artwork that they use.  (Ndebele artwork is often used when depicting South Africa and was therefore used by British Airways, when they tried Ethnic Liveries in 1997).
At Emgwenya (previously Waterval Boven) the line zig zags down the mountain to Emakhazeni (previously Waterval Onder).  The old Dutch names depicting the top and the bottom of the 75m Elands Falls.

We have now entered the Lowveld, South Africa fruit and forestry area, with the key town being Mbombela (Nelspruit) and then the train heads north via Hazyview (gateway to the Kruger National Park) and onto Hoedspruit where you will leave the train for your safari.
